We seek motivated interns to support the work of the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC). The UNOCC is a multi-party entity reporting to the USG for Policy in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG), through the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Unit (EOSG/SPMU) and, on peacekeeping matters, with oversight from the USG for Peace Operations, through the Director for Coordination and Shared Services (ODCSS). The UNOCC also receives strategic oversight from a Client Board of principals from each of the client entities. The UNOCC provides global situational awareness, crisis and risk management, as well as facilitates cross-pillar analysis and decision-making in the UN. The UNOCC is operationally positioned under the ODCSS between the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the Department of Peace Operations.

UNOCC internships are for an ideal period of six (6) months.

The internship is UNPAID; full-time internship working hours are 35 hours per week. This internship can be undertaken in person on the UN premises in a hybrid working arrangement or remotely from outside the New York City, USA, duty station.

Responsibilities

• Produce GIS maps for a variety of purposes and users, including for operational support, advocacy, awareness-raising and strategic planning. • Writing / supporting development of code to automate and scale creation of geospatial analytical products, such as base maps, zonal statistics, visualizations, etc. • Identify, access and catalogue map information sources. • Provide mapping, reports, analysis, data, products, database development, and Geographic Information System (GIS) data organization • Creation and administration of GIS web maps • Automation of GIS processes • Incorporate cloud-based information from databases and mapping systems into geospatial products (maps, dashboards, story maps, etc) • Data cleaning and data management methods for large and small datasets

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

1.Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent)

2.The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.

  1. Proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment, scanner, printer, etc.).

4.Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.

5.Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

B.S. in Geographic Information Systems or a related field is required.

Proficiency with the ArcGIS suite of products is required.

Knowledge of database and data query methods, along with knowledge of scripting, including knowledge of Modelbuilder, python and the ArcPy library is required.

Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required (written and oral). Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
