The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions around the world as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies Funds and Programs.
This Internship is located in the Internet of Things Support Unit (IoTSU) within the infrastructure and Operations Section (IOS) under the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications technologies (SGITT) at the UNGSC in Valencia, Spain.
The Internet of Things Support Unit (IoTSU) is an innovative pillar of the infrastructure and Operations Section (IOS) under Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT). It is responsible for designing and implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and project that satisfy the requirements of the Department of Operational Support (DOS) missions and field office.
The internship is for six (6) months in Valencia. Two (2) posts are available.
Responsibilities
The Intern will work under the direct guidance of the Chief Internet of Things Support Unit (IoTSU) or other designated officer and will be responsible for following duties:
• Support Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Camp (City) Projects and Systems.
• Participate in Validation process and document lifecycle, including network, meters and sensors installation/operational procedures.
• Support and provide feedback to the solutions design specification creation and implementation across multiple projects, of varying scope.
• Support resourcing estimates and technical configurations, of client quotations, to the Unit Development Team.
• Under supervision of the Chief of Unit, or other senior staff, coordinate work with stakeholders, including clients, vendors, and contractors.
• Support the development Team, Architect, Engineers, System Analysts and Software Engineers (UNGSC) and provides the necessary support to teams on missions (customer) sites, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within scope.
• Work with clients to understand, agree and implement technical requirements, in conjunction with the Team.
• Assist in managing team’s tasks within implementation and development projects.
• May receive tasks, duties, technical guidance or learning objectives from the Chief of the Unit and/or other senior staff in the Unit.
• Help develop and improve Integration’s internal processes and management system by reporting corrective actions, updates, and improvement ideas.
• Other duties as required.
Education
Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
The field of study must be closely related to the type of Internship you are applying for: Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Data Management or Information Science, Technology or Information systems, Cyber Security or related field of studies.
The Intern is expected to:
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
• Be computer literate in standard software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Be proficient in standard office automation (equipment, scanner, printer, etc.).
Knowledge and understanding of the following is an advantage:
- How SQL Databases are setup & administered with respect to PI systems.
- Technical Writing Skills: Ability to write instructions for installation, configuration and troubleshooting of interfaces.
- Knowledge of SCADA, PLC, OPC, Continuous/Batch Historians, MES systems and DCS Based control systems, including network topology concepts.
- Understanding of PI Architecture.
- Competent in implementing, configuring, and troubleshooting of OSI PI Interfaces including but not limited to OPC DA, PItoPI, RDBMS, UFL, EMDVB and SISBatch.
Good writing and drafting skills are an advantage.
Having an English-language certificate is an advantage.
