This position is located in the Digital Services Unit in the Digital Promotion Branch, News and Media Division under the Department of Public Information. The incumbent will report directly to the Chief of the DSU. The Digital Services Unit provides expertise in the development and maintenance of multilingual web solutions for flagship DPI web products, such as UN News, UN Press, United Nations main website, UN Events, etc. The team in the unit programs and maintains many specialized applications used by many DPI offices, as well as customized solutions for our various UN clients. The Unit ensures that websites produced are easy to maintain, and are able to leverage the rich public content that is produced by DPI, to enrich their own sites.Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the Chief of the Digital Promotion Branch, News and Media Division, and the supervision of the Chief, Digital Services Unit, the incumbent is responsible for the following:
- Creates new websites by:
a) creating prototypes and mockups;
b) building HTML sites, or CMS themes for websites using advanced front-end development skills;
c) researching and implementing new CSS frameworks and other media components;
d) identifying and resolving front-end development issues;
e) providing web enhancements within specifications and designs, for old and new websites;
f) providing front-end support to all the language units throughout the website creation process;
g) implementing interaction with client side JavaScript libraries such as Query and other side programming languages. - Assists with the development and promotion of the UN web branding style guides, using UN established standards for web technologies, web design programming languages and tools.
- Works with unit developers and in coordination with language units ensure the multilingual capabilities of CMS platforms are supported by:
a) manage assigned projects through the use of collaboration tools such as Wikis, for technical documentation, JIRA for issue tracking, and version control tools;
b) troubleshooting front end webpage loading and multimedia integration issues;
c) researching and implementing multilingual plugins that work for all six(6) official languages;
d) testing plugins and multilingual components;
e) adapting themes to the multilingual platform. - Assists with testing to ensure that websites meet stringent quality controls and use applicable web standards by:
a) checking cross-browser compatibility and accessibility using online validation tools;
b) ensuring images, text, forms, audio and video content meet accessibility and design compatibility requirements;
c) checking for usability, functionality and language adaptation across popular web access devices and platforms, including mobile and tablets devices;
d) adjusting designs accordingly by implementing responsive media queries, scripts and other responsive design techniques. - Works closely with the clients to collect and document user requirements by:
a) conducting and documenting interviews with users and other interested parties;
b) creating workflows charts, wire frames and high-fidelity mockups that meet UN web branding standards. - Develops and maintains working relationships with DPI and Secretariat staff, who produce original content for the UN website, plans and carries out website improvements required by client offices.
- Supervises the work of individual contractors on client projects to ensure languages compatibility, accessibility and all technical standards of websites.
- Provides orientation and training to other staff in the section and users in client offices on the use of CMS platforms such as WordPress and Drupal, on the Adobe Creative Suite and HTML, CSS and JavaScript.Competencies

High school diploma or equivalent.Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in public communications, web design, website production, front end web/usability design or related area is required. Experience producing responsive web designs with a mobile first approach and a portfolio that demonstrates excellent visual designs is desirable. Experience working with Adobe suite of design tools such as Photoshop is desirable. Experience in designing and developing interactive web features is desirable. Experience working with Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress and Drupal is desirable. Experience working with agile tools and version control systems is desirable.Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN Official language is desirable.Assessment
