Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships:

The position will report directly to the Creative Director, UN Pavilion at Expo 2020, as part of the Outreach Division in the Department of Global Communications. The Interpretive Planner will work closely with the Creative Director to realize the vision for the UN Pavilion for Expo 2020 and develop an interpretive plan for the UN Pavilion including storyline, exhibit concepts and briefs for digital media, interactives and writing.

Responsibilities: The Interpretive Planner will carry out research, writing, create presentations and collaborate closely with the design team and digital media producers to develop an interpretive plan for iterative review throughout the design process; develop briefs for all exhibits; oversee and maintain editorial control of all writing; and develop presentations for each deliverable.

Specific duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop an interpretive plan for the UN Pavilion that articulates the strategic direction, narrative, themes, stories and messaging and how they will be conveyed through a cohesive design, including all physical and digital aspects of the design;

  • Present iterations of the plan throughout the design process for review by internal and external partners as required;

  • In-depth research for the narrative of the UN Pavilion, including across multiple UN departments, and desk research, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the UN story including but not limited to UN75 initiatives, the Sustainable Development Goals, climate change, youth, technology, and cities-based programs;

  • Collaborate closely with the Creative Director on a strategic framework and messaging for the Pavilion that positions the UN and UN agencies as leading global multilateral efforts on climate, technology, youth, and cities in particular;

  • Write briefing notes for creatives and UN agencies, funds and programs, requesting specific content and delivery methods;

  • Develop a narrative, themes and stories for the Pavilion experience that reflects messaging, strategic direction and vision of the UN for its presence at Expo 2020;

  • Work closely with the design team to develop a design concept that reflects the concept and content and represents a ground-breaking, creative approach;

  • Develop exhibit concepts for physical, interactive, and digital exhibits including virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, games, touch interactives, immersive installations, sensory experiences, and graphic displays;

  • Create presentations for internal and external review of the design concept at all milestones;

  • Organize creative workshops with the team and consultants for the development of the concept, content and design;

  • Carry our research and oversee copyright arrangements for images, footage and any other media assets required for the UN Pavilion;

  • Oversee the content coordinator’s research and coordination tasks;

  • Oversee a copywriting contractor for the development of all written content;

  • Assist in the development of branding and publicity materials for the UN Pavilion at Expo 2020 including posters, flyers, promotional videos, website and social media campaign for UN Pavilion at Expo 2020;

  • Write and publish meeting notes for the team;

  • Assist with organizing meetings for the team and external partners;

  • Perform other duties as required by the Creative Director of the UN at Expo 2020.

Competencies:

· Professionalism: Extensive experience in interpretive planning for exhibits including highly developed research strategies; outstanding writing skills and extensive experience in conceptualizing creative and innovative narratives, themes and stories;

· Extensive experience in brief writing for design, media production, written content and graphic production;

· Extensive knowledge and experience in interpreting current global issues for multiple audiences;

· A strategic approach to developing content in respect to global, current issues and the role of the UN; an excellent knowledge of relevant scientific, social, cultural and economic topics; and a passion for creating inspiring experiences that have the potential for real impact;

· Extensive experience in working collaboratively with 3D and graphic designers, writers, and digital media producers to create highly creative and innovative exhibits and experiences;

· Extensive experience in overseeing and editing written materials for exhibits;

· Excellence in written and verbal communication;

· Experience with a variety of research database, editing and presentation software;

· Understanding of UN policies and programmes; Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

· Planning& Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

· Accountability: Takes ownership of all responsibilities and honours commitments; delivers outputs for which one has responsibility within prescribed time, cost and quality standards; operates in compliance with organizational regulations and rules; supports subordinates, provides oversight and takes responsibility for delegated assignments; takes personal responsibility for his/her own shortcomings and those of the work unit, where applicable.

Qualifications:

Education: Advanced University Degree in Interpretive Planning, Museum Studies, Communications, Exhibition Design, Marketing or a related subject;

Experience: 5-7 years of relevant experience in exhibit design, creative and content design, design, interactive installations for UN and/or international organizations and/or private sector;

Language: Fluency in English, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of Arabic is an asset. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
