The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide.

The position is located in the Analytics and Location Intelligence Unit (ALIU) of the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) within the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunication Technologies (SGITT) at the UNGSC, Brindisi, Italy.

The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Chief ALIU or other designated officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Geospatial Information Officer is responsible for the following:

• Engage in the timely preparation, maintenance, and provision of geospatial information and maps in support of the Mission's operations; Collect, process, and evaluate geospatial data including vector, raster and thematic data; Compile large-scale operation maps and small-scale briefing/report maps; and conduct geospatial/terrain analysis studies and prediction of the effects of terrain, weather and situation on the Mission's operations.
• Assist in performing quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on all products generated and disseminated by the Section/Unit including data and maps; Assist in providing geospatial information training and education programmes for Mission staff; Assist in managing the technical work of junior staff.
• Archive Mission geospatial data and maintain the Mission's geo-database system; Maintain the Missions' intranet map server(s) and its associated services.
• Contribute to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
• Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns, using basic machine learning techniques, statistical methods to identify relevant features and variables in structured and unstructured sources of information and data.
• Process, analyze, and interpret aerial/satellite imagery for intelligence applications,
• Undertakes spatial and terrain analysis for geospatial intelligence applications.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in geospatial information science, cartography, geography or other disciplines that involve geospatial information related programmes. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two (2) years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in the field of geospatial information (e.g. geospatial information applications, geospatial database management, geospatial/terrain analysis, cartography and mapping, image processing, GPS and surveying) or related fields is required.

Experience in conflict surveillance, damage and impact assessment, border-crossing monitoring, and incident analysis is required.

Experience in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) software and applications is required.

Experience providing services in the field of geospatial information to or in a field operation of the United Nations common system or comparable international organization is desirable.

Experience with spatial database systems such as ArcGIS Pro, ERDAS Imagine and/or ENVI is desirable.

Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
