Our high-impact approach brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action to change lives and make the world a fairer place.Role overview For VSO Social Accountability (SA) implies 1) marginalised and impoverished people having influence over policy decisions that impact their lives; 2) policy makers endeavouring to ensure that policy and practice is inclusive and pro poor; and 3) groups of people holding each other to account towards peace and social justice (e.g. gender, ethnicity, age , religion, power politics and other divisions).

The role of Lead Advisor Social Accountability is to ensure that SA mechanisms that aim to serve the interests of marginalised and impoverished people are woven into all VSO programming; to provide high quality content and methodological leadership to the SA Core Approach Team so that they can the conceptualise and integrate social accountability approaches into signature programmes as they are developed; to ensure that VSO is learning from its own and other's work in SA; to advise other Core Programme Area and Core Approach teams on SA, and to provide insights and commentary on programme funding proposals and they are developed.

Skills, qualifications and experience required The ideal candidate will have:

  • extensive experience of direct work in social accountability, participation, governance and/or peace/conflict work - supporting research, planning and implementation of programmes at all levels, for the most part in the global 'South'.
  • up to date thinking about systems and power approaches to development and the role of social accountability in addressing marginalization and impoverishment.
  • demonstrable skills and knowledge about development at equivalent level to a post-graduate qualification.
  • excellent analytical skills and the ability to plan strategically from an organisational and transformational perspective.

Candidates will also need to be:

  • confident and articulate in systems thinking and working with theories of change and be able to communicate complex ideas in different contexts and to diverse audiences effectively, verbally, in writing and using visual cues.
  • gender savvy and passionate about inclusion, participatory development and people first practice.
